佛身上的异相之一，表示吉祥无比。印度传说以为是有德者的标帜。在梵语佛经中本非字，唯在中国皆收入字书中。卍字之形诸书亦不统一，也作「卐」。《龙龛手鉴·杂部》：「卐，音万。是如来身有吉祥文也。」
